- The Office apps available from the Mac App Store provide the very latest version of Office on the Mac. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook require a Microsoft 365 subscription to activate. OneNote and OneDrive do not require a Microsoft 365 subscription, but some premium features may require a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Server.app is software that you initially have to purchase via the Mac App Store. Updates for software purchased via the Mac App Store are also distributed via the Mac App Store. Such updates are not available via any other channel.
Therefore on your server you would launch Mac App Store, make sure you are logged in to your App Store account, and then check for updates.
Note: While 5.1.5 will work in El Capitan 10.11.5 and 10.11.6, version 5.1.7 will only work in 10.11.6. You therefore have to first upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.6.
I have had no problems first upgrading my servers to 10.11.6 and then upgrading Server.app to 5.1.7.
